From the Author's Preface
During the ten years I taught in college, and the numerous writing conferences and workshops I have been a part of since then, I've heard volumes of advice about the technical aspects of writing. Plot, character, pace, description, dialogue, theme, metaphor, symbolism, and so on. In the conferences especially, there has been a lot of good practical information about finding an agent, attracting a publisher, self-publishing, e-publishing, and marketing a book once it is in print. All this is very good, helpful, and necessary. For high school and college writers, the technical material is useful; for those writing a book or hoping to make a career in the world of words, the practical material can provide a clear understanding of the publishing landscape.
But again and again in those classrooms and workshops, I was struck by the fact that very little was being said about what might be called the emotional or psychological aspects of the writing process. Over the course of thirty years in the profession, thirteen book publications, and several hundred articles, reviews, Op-Ed pieces, travel essays, food essays, personal essays, political analysis, profiles, and thanks to countless conversations with writers – some famous, some widely published and admired, some struggling to finish a first book or find an agent, and some simply hoping to earn a good grade on a college assignment – I know how critical that interior dimension of the writing life is. In this book I hope to shed some light on that dimension of the work, not as a psychiatrist or counselor, but as an author, because I am sure that writing success – however that term is defined for the individual writer – always has its roots in the soil of the psychological/emotional world.
From chapters entitled “Writer’s Block” to “Finding A Mentor” to “Impatience and Rejection”, Merullo covers these topics with the insight, empathy and encouragement of an author who has “been there.” Demons of the Blank Page is a no-nonsense handbook and guide for aspiring and established writers alike.
Merullo’s work has been hailed “happily inventive, precise and musical” by The Boston Globe and “emotionally complex, politically intelligent, [and] beautifully written” by Kirkus Reviews.

I teach essay writing in college, and I love Merullo's "Buddha" books, so I was eager to get this. I love this book, too. I can only read a chapter every few days because what I find in here is so rich. I'm trying to write fiction now, late in life, and the book gives me some good strategies--but mostly, a good friend.Product details

Demons of the Blank Page edition by Roland Merullo Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
"Demons of the Blank Page" is an informative, inspiring, and motivational book which identifies a multitude of obstacles which prevent potential writers from getting their story down on paper. Merullo confronts each "demon" head-on, explains how each one inhibits effective writing, and then shares wisdom and experience about how to effectively overcome these barriers to success. This book was instrumental in my ability to finish writing, and then publishing, my first book.
I had the good fortune to have Roland Merullo as a professor when I was at Bennington College. At that time, his third novel, "Revere Beach Boulevard" was just coming out. Since then, I have always kept an eye out for his books over the years.
"Demons of the Blank Page" brought back fond memories of Roland's laid back, gentle teaching style (I could even hear his Revere accent in my mind while reading the book). Tackling subjects such as writer's block, dealing with criticism, jealousy, and even overconfidence, this slim, but potent volume is chock-full of the wisdom Roland has acquired over the last thirty years or so from being a working writer in the trenches.
I have been a professional playwright for the youth and high school markets for the last three years, hoping to become a full-time writer. This book was a valuable read for me as I approached finishing the rough draft of my first novel. I have always frozen up when I approached fiction writing, killing many stories in early drafts due to my overpowering self-criticism. I was happy to find this very subject addressed with more advice than just "don't stop", which is the advice I have sadly been left with from other writing books.
If you are a writer with confidence issues (and what writer isn't, at some time or another?), I would strongly recommend taking a look at this book. I'm sure you will find Roland just as engaging and intelligent as I always have.
Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts on "Demons of the Blank Page".
I can't really review this as I bought it as a gift for a writer/friend of mine.
I've read Roland Merullo's books, which I just loved and thought my friend, who is writing a book could benefit from reading this book.
The book offers an interesting and different perspective on what stops the writing process. I would recommend it.
This book offers sound advice for any writer or for anyone else embarking on a creative journey (painting, acting, music, etc.). Merullo manages to weave spiritual profundity into the proceedings very smoothly.
An insightful and practical approach to recognizing and dealing with the sometimes subtle and ambiguous hindrances to putting pen to paper. Often finding myself unable to continue and not knowing why, the frustration mounts and the pen abandoned. This is exactly what was missing.
I find I am able to "discern" those demons and with Mr. Merullo's help, make use of them or get them out of the way.
Usually, there is one or two places in an instructional book that I have to work on to incorporate if I haven't outright rejected it. I can say honestly I have not found that place in this book.
I would recommend this for students, professionals and those that would fancy themselves "aspiring" writers of every ilk.
I hope you enjoy this work as much as I have and that for you its practicality is as complete.
I teach essay writing in college, and I love Merullo's "Buddha" books, so I was eager to get this. I love this book, too.
